Sustainable Fashion Comparison Website – Compare Ethics – Responds to the Environmental Audit Committee Report
Abbie Morris, Co-founder and CEO at Compare Ethics responds: “We welcome the Environmental Audit Committee’s report ‘Fixing Fashion: clothing consumption and sustainability’. Whilst it draws a line in the sand for the social and environmental destruction by the fashion industry, providing a framework of action for businesses and consumers, the report could and should go further. Now must be the time to make it easy to shop sustainably.
“The report puts increased action and responsibility on the consumer for their clothes and shopping habits, but more needs to be done to support accessible platforms for consumers to shop sustainably.
“As a dedicated sustainable fashion comparison website, we are calling for a clear fashion garment labelling system, that makes it easy for consumers to understand the clothes they are buying, where they come from, how they are made and the different aspects of sustainability.”
Compare Ethics, which uses an in-house ranking methodology and algorithms to compare the best sustainable brands on the market, believes that there must be industry wide action.
Morris continues, “we need industry wide consensus on key terms and standard practice. Only then can we explain the environmental impact or sustainability of textiles in an easy to digest way. People do not always shop sustainably because it takes time and research and there is little information in a digestible format.”
Morris questions, “If we can create a clear colour coded labelling system for the food industry, why can’t we create this for the fashion industry? When we buy food, we demand to know the contents and whether it is good for us. The fashion industry is one of the most damaging industries in the world, it should be no different. We need a fashion labelling system today, so we can make a significant impact on tomorrow.”
Since launching in the Summer of 2018, Compare Ethics has seen strong demand, with 110% average growth in sales. Compare Ethics will now be looking to engage with Government and Stakeholders on the need for fashion labelling and promoting sustainability awareness amongst consumers.
